Sprint Q&A

What is a Development Sprint?

A Development Sprint is a collaborative working session for open-source projects. Participants work with project maintainers and other contributors on useful tasks, share knowledge and learn by doing. Contributions can include code, tests, documentation, translation and other work that a project needs. This is a community collaboration day, not a taught workshop or a step-by-step lesson. Come ready to contribute in a way that fits your experience.

What will I do on Sprint Day?

Choose a project you are interested in, discuss a suitable task with its lead or contributors, and work on it together. Read the project's contribution and setup instructions when they are available. The detailed 2026 timetable and project arrangements will be announced when confirmed.

How is Sprint Day different from Conference Day?

Conference Day on 14 November centres on talks, sessions and community activities. Sprint Day on 15 November focuses on working together on Python and open-source projects. They are separate activities and require separate ticket registration.

Who is Sprint Day for?

Anyone interested in Python, open source or collaborative learning is welcome, including experienced contributors and people making their first contribution. You do not need to bring your own project. Look for a project whose goals and tasks match your interests.

Can Python beginners take part?

Yes. The event welcomes newcomers as well as experienced contributors. Tell the project lead what you have tried and what you would like to learn. Depending on the project, a first task could involve documentation, translation, reproducing a problem or a small code change; available tasks and support vary by project.

What should I bring and prepare?

Bring a laptop capable of running the tools for your chosen project, its charger and any adapters you need. Before the event, read the project's README, contribution guide and setup instructions when available, and prepare the accounts it uses, such as GitHub. Check the individual project's requirements before attending.

Can I come to observe and learn before contributing?

If you want to observe, register for Sprint Day and speak with the project lead or organizing team about how to join the group. You can explain your interests and experience, learn how the project works and agree on a suitable way to participate. Please respect the group's working space and discussions.

What if I need to arrive late or leave early?

Coordinate with the project lead or organizing team in advance. Let the group know when you expect to arrive or leave, so you can agree on a task and hand over any work. Check the confirmed timetable and entry instructions before travelling.

Is Sprint Day free, and do I need a separate ticket?

Admission to PyCon HK 2026 is free, but Sprint Day on 15 November and Conference Day on 14 November require separate tickets. Use the registration button to register for the day or days you plan to attend. Optional contributions, T-shirts and PyNight are separate from free Sprint Day admission.

Can I propose my own project?

Yes. The published 2026 announcement invites proposals for Python and open-source Sprint projects. Use the call for Sprint projects and leads to describe your project, what you would like to work on and how others can contribute. Submitting a proposal does not by itself confirm a place in the programme. The Sprint submission deadline is 14 November 2026 at 23:59 Hong Kong time (UTC+8).

How do I become a Sprint Lead?

Use the call for Sprint projects and leads to submit your interest. A lead helps introduce the project, explain its setup and contribution process, and identify tasks that participants can work on together. Include the preparation participants will need and the kinds of contributions you can support.

Which projects and Sprint Leads are taking part?

We are finalizing the projects, Sprint Leads and detailed arrangements. Confirmed information and project-specific setup instructions will be added to this page when available.
